Solving a word scramble
A word scramble hands you the letters of a word in the wrong order. Type them into the box exactly as they appear — order does not matter — and press Unscramble. Every word those letters can spell comes back, grouped by length with the longest group first.
Which result is the answer?
Start at the top. If your puzzle scrambled a seven-letter word, the answer is in the 7 letter group, and usually there is only one entry there. The shorter groups below are the extra words your letters happen to contain — useful in a game of Boggle, irrelevant to a straight scramble.
Missing or unreadable letters
Puzzles get smudged, and worksheets sometimes leave a blank on purpose. Put a question mark ? or an asterisk * where the unknown letter goes and it will stand in for any letter.
When you already know part of the answer
Scrambles often come with a hint: a starting letter, a category, a couple of revealed squares. Use Starts with, Ends with or Length to apply what you know. The Contains box takes an underscore as a one-letter gap, so E_O finds lemon — that is the one to reach for when the puzzle shows you letters in position.
Scrambles, anagrams and unscramblers
The three names get used interchangeably, but they are not quite the same job. This page and the Word Unscrambler list every word your letters can make, long and short. The Anagram Solver is stricter: it returns only the words that use all of them, which is what you want when the puzzle promises the answer uses every letter.
