What counts as an anagram
An anagram uses every letter of the original, each exactly once, with nothing left over and nothing added. SILENT rearranges into LISTEN, ENLIST, INLETS and TINSEL. It does not rearrange into LIST — that drops two letters, which makes it a shorter word your letters happen to contain, not an anagram.
That single rule is the whole difference between this page and the Word Unscrambler. Same letters, same dictionary, different question.
How to use the anagram solver
Type all your letters into the box and press Solve. Because an anagram has to spend every tile, the answers are always exactly as long as what you typed — there is no length filter here, and none is needed. Results are sorted by score, so if you are hunting a board play the best one is already on top.
When nothing comes back
Most random letter combinations have no anagram at all. That is the normal outcome, not a fault in the solver — English simply has far fewer words than there are ways to arrange seven letters. When it happens, the Word Unscrambler will still show you the shorter words those letters can make.
Blank tiles
A question mark ?, an asterisk * or a space stands in for any single letter. It still counts towards the total that has to be used up, so a six-letter rack with one blank returns six-letter anagrams.
Narrowing the list
Long racks can return more anagrams than you want to read. Starts with and Ends with cut them down fast, and Contains takes an underscore as a one-letter gap — E_O finds lemon — so you can describe the shape of the answer as well as its letters.
Scoring and dictionaries
Switch the tab between Scrabble and Words With Friends to value each anagram with that game's tiles. The Dictionary menu goes further and drops anything your game will not accept: Scrabble US (NWL), Scrabble UK (Collins) or Words With Friends. There are Wordle settings too, useful when the rack is five letters.
Frequently asked questions
What is an anagram?
An anagram rearranges every letter of a word or phrase into another real word, using each letter exactly once and none left over. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams of each other; so are HEART and EARTH.
How is this different from a word unscrambler?
An anagram solver only returns words that use every letter you entered. An unscrambler also returns the shorter words you can build from part of them. Enter SILENT here and you get ENLIST, INLETS, LISTEN and TINSEL; the unscrambler would add LINE, TILE, NEST and dozens more.
Why did my letters return nothing?
Most letter combinations have no anagram at all — that is normal, not a fault. Try the Word Unscrambler instead to see the shorter words your letters can still make.
Can I use a blank tile?
Yes. A question mark (?), an asterisk (*) or a space stands in for any one letter, and it still counts towards the total that has to be used up.
